On January 20, 2025, President Trump was inaugurated for a second term in Washington, D.C. Just blocks apart, two starkly different visions of America played out. Downtown, celebrations unfolded across three inaugural galas. But only two miles away, protesters from Far Left groups gathered to condemn not only Trump’s return to office, but also the war in Gaza and the broader actions of the federal government as a whole.
Outside Union Station, Trump supporters—many wearing MAGA hats—celebrated alongside a visible contingent of Proud Boys. Throughout the area, stickers for Patriot Front, a white supremacist group designated by the Anti-Defamation League, were found pasted on public signs. Humvees and police barricades created perimeters, attempting to contain any tension between opposing groups.
This series documents that day as it was: divided, charged, and reflective of the ongoing struggle over the identity and direction of the country.
